Term of Service: Approximately April 1, 2016 through September 30, 2016 (6 months)

Position Summary: The Intern will be supervised by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge Biologist. This full-time (40 hours/week) internship offers the opportunity to gain field experience conducting bird surveys and a variety of other biological field techniques. The intern will work closely with the Refuge Biologist to conduct bird surveys, assist with wildlife management programs, and conduct outreach activities. The primary duty of the intern will be to conduct weekly seabird monitoring surveys on established plots at Cape Perpetua.

Secondary duties will include black oystercatcher surveys along the Oregon coast, tufted puffin monitoring, and assisting the Biologist with a variety of other field and data entry tasks. There may be sufficient time for the Intern to conduct a personal independent field study using Refuge resources, subject to the Biologist’s approval.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
• Conduct bird surveys using established field protocols, which involve identifying birds by sight and sound, recording field data, and entering data in an electronic database.
• Assist the Refuge Biologist as needed with field tasks including nesting seabird (black oystercatcher, tufted puffin, cormorant) observations and surveys.
• Assist with general office duties directly related to field work, including data entry into MS Excel spreadsheets and Access database, conducting nesting seabird counts on aerial photographs using GIS software.
• Assist the Refuge’s Friends Group, Shoreline Education for Awareness, and the Refuge with the development of outreach programs and special events that focus on teaching people of all ages about wildlife conservation.

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service, is recruiting a Visitor Center Manager/Environmental Education Specialist at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (Clark County, NV). The Specialist will work collaboratively with Refuge staff to manage and implement a variety of visitor service programs. Programs will mainly revolve around managing a visitor center, interpretation, education and volunteers.

Specific tasks include:
• Open and develop operating procedures at a new visitor center
• Develop and present a variety of interpretive programs;
• Development of interpretive materials such as brochures, pamphlets, exhibits, website updates, education kits, social media and signs;
• Develop and present environmental education programs;
• Prepare and conduct teacher training and orientation programs;
• Hire and supervise volunteers working in the visitor center

Compensation:
o Rate of pay: $21.00/hour

o Housing available at a reduced rate in shared bunkhouse for the first 30 days to help with relocation

Member will attend Conservation Corps AmeriCorps training sessions, site visits, orientations and workshops, as well as plan and implement training days with other Conservation Corps programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:
— Positive attitude and strong commitment to service and community work.
— Self-directed with a high comfort level for taking initiative and ownership of a project.
— Strong written and oral communication skills.
— Strong organizational and word processing skills.
— Relevant coursework in biology, ecology or related field of study and/or equivalent professional experience such that the applicant can adequately communicate natural phenomena.

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is excited to offer two career preparatory programs for students from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Working closely with the National Park Service (NPS) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, we’ve developed expense-paid internships aimed at providing students with the mentorship and hands-on experience needed to build a career in the conservation field.

Internships are offered in a wide variety of fields–education, historical preservation, resource management, visitor service, and many others–but they all have one thing in common: they promote social, personal, and academic development, and pave the way for professional success.

Candidates must be:
US citizens or permanent residents
Undergraduate or graduate students during the 2014-2015 academic year
Available for a 12-week summer internship
Open-minded, with an adventurous spirit
Not necessarily experienced in conservation, but eager to learn more — all majors welcome

The Directorate Resource Assistants Fellows Program (DFP) is a new fellowship program in the U.S. Fish and Wildilfe Service (Service). The DFP is designed to provide fellowship opportunities for undergraduate – rising seniors and current or newly enrolled graduate students. Fellows will have an opportunity to apply classroom theories, principles and concepts to real-world situations by working 11 consecutive weeks full-time (beginning on or about May 27th) on a project that is rigorous in nature. Fellows may be eligible for a permanent position that is related to their college field of study in the Service. Fellows will have an opportunity to network and develop relationships with Service program officials and staff. Over 40 positions are available.

Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge Student Internship 2014

The internship is expected to last 10 weeks. The period is anticipated to run from late May to early August but specific dates will be negotiated once a candidate is selected. The refuge is located in NE Washington and encompasses more than 40,000 acres of forested habitats. It lies in the Selkirk Mountains, one of the western most chains of the Rockies. It is drained by several small streams and includes three fishing lakes. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife native to the Northern Rocky Mountains. The focus of the position is wildlife habitat management but will also assist with hands on wildlife management activities. The selected candidate will gain experience in forest management, refuge management.

Duties:
The projects the position is expected to assist with or perform include:

Quaking aspen inventory and assessment
Noxious weed control
Reptile inventory
Monitoring of camera traps for large mammals
Rare plant survey
Additional habitat and wildlife related management and monitoring activities are also expected to require short term assistance. These may include: bat surveys, deer monitoring, forest restoration, and various other wildlife, plant or habitat projects.

Qualifications:
While field experience is not required, a successful candidate will be near completion of a BS degree in biology, wildlife, forestry, botany or related area. He/she should be able to work independently as well as part of team.
