Position Details:
-Represent the institute in communications with policy makers, government agencies, corporate, individual, academic and institutional partners and associates;
-Develop familiarity with NECSI related research and concepts;
-Collaborate with NECSI staff in drafting press releases, media relations content, white papers, social media content, and other institutional literature;
-Coordinate and organize educational programs and courses hosted by institute;
-Promote NECSI projects to scientific community and other stakeholders to build relationships and collaborations.

Requirements:
-Bachelors Degree in science related field

General Description
The Natural Areas Association (NAA) is seeking a Managing Editor (ME) for the Natural Areas Journal (NAJ). This contracted, part-time position averages 30 hours/month (the hours/week will vary) and will formally begin in mid-late June 2016 (or as soon as filled). The Managing Editor will work from their current location. The current ME and/or production manager will be available to facilitate a smooth transition, and to ensure continuity and the ongoing success of the NAJ.

Natural Areas Journal Background The NAJ is the NAA’s flagship publication. The Journal provides a forum for communication among persons involved in the identification, preservation, protection, and management of natural areas and elements of biological diversity. The NAJ focus is on nature preserves, natural areas, state or national parks, rare and endangered species, land preservation, and practical approaches to natural areas work. The Journal includes peer-reviewed original research articles on applied conservation biology, ecological restoration, natural areas management, ecological assessment and monitoring, invasive and exotic species management, habitat protection, fire ecology, natural areas identification, natural areas programs and conservation ethics.

The Journal is published quarterly and is available in hardcopy and online to NAA members. A sample issue can be viewed online via the NAA website, naturalareas.org (you may contact the NAA for guest online access or to request a sample hardcopy at info@naturalareas.org). Each issue averages 100-120 pages and generally contains 10-12 articles, plus editorial content and 5 book reviews. The managing editor (a contracted position) is responsible for all tasks involved in the development/production of the Journal that occur after manuscripts have been peer-reviewed and accepted by the editor, up to the time of transmittal to the Production Manager, who is responsible for the design/layout of the issue and sending the print-ready files to the printer, Allen Press.

  • Organize, promote and participate in news conferences, telepressers, media breakfasts, and similar, and write associated opinion media, press releases and statements.
  • Write edit and pitch rapid-response press releases, statements and social media content on a wide variety of issues and campaigns as needed.
  • Develop and deepen relationships with reporters, bloggers, and opinion writers through face to face meetings, phone calls, and written correspondence. Respond to media inquiries. Maintain a up-to-date database of top national reporters.
  • Work with program directors to write and post regular blogs on Huffington post, Medium, Environment America’s website, and other media.
  • Track media coverage and reach into key outlets, and adapt strategies to grow and improve coverage results over time
  • Coordinate with digital campaigners to guide creation of compelling online content, including photos, videos and infographics.
  • Develop a twitter following of at least 500 and follow and interact with 300+ national reporters.

The Outreach Coordinator will focus on broadening support and awareness, and foster problem-solving and dialogue among civic leaders and organizations, tribal representatives, elected and agency officials, and other members of the public. Must be able to work independently, and maintain tight coordination and communication with the Conservation Northwest staff in Twisp, Bellingham, and Seattle. Team leadership and management skills will be beneficial.

Duties:
Manage outreach operations supporting conservation program objectives;
Maintain contacts with public officials, tribal representatives, and the press;
Represent Conservation Northwest on the Northeast Washington Forestry Coalition, and other forums;
Build relationships and maintain communications at local levels to enhance public awareness and support;
Develop materials (fact sheets, website content, articles, alerts, talking points);
Organize and manage events, hikes, fundraisers, and other activities;
Mobilize supporters in northeast Washington as needed;
Supervise and manage interns and volunteers.
