  • Explore the genre of the nature essay through reading, analysis and engagement with the natural world.
  • Examine famous and impactful texts by Rachel Carson, Barry Lopez and Henry David Thoreau; pick apart the texts, see what makes them work, and then create your own compelling nature writing!
  • Produce inspiring nature essays in a workshop style class and learn how writing can galvanize environmental movements.

  • Learn more about American waste production and disposal; where does it go? Who does it impact?
  • Explore trans-boundary dumping and the environmental, economic and ethical costs of waste in this country.
  • Examine the history and current state of American waste through an eco-justice lens.

ENVIR 100: Introduction to Environmental Studies
5 credits – Hybrid class w/ Yen-Chu Weng – Counts for I&S/NW and Env. Studies Core  – Open to all majors. Great intro for Freshmen and Sophomores who are exploring environmental majors.
The hybrid class model includes online lectures so students can listen at any time, and in-person weekly quiz sections.

Learn about complex environmental issues in a local and global context. Practice environmental communication and critical thinking skills through peer engagement, iterative writing, a team project and public poster presentation.

Become familiar with the varied agricultural ecosystems in the PNW and design and practice implementing agro-ecosystem ideals on the student farm at UW.

ENVIR 495 B: The Nature Essay

ENVIR 495 C: Landscape Change in the Pacific NorthWest
5 credits – Tim Billo – A-term – Counts for Env. Studies Perspectives & Experiences – Required field trip  – Open to all majors.
Examine the cause and consequences of wilderness loss and landscape change in the Pacific Northwest, through a challenging 9-day wilderness expedition in the Olympic Peninsula.

A Naturalist Internship will provide the opportunity to gain invaluable, professional development and real-world experiences at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park (MBSP).

MBSP, Palm Beach County’s only state park, is situated on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lake Worth Lagoon.  The Park is made up of 438 acres of pristine coastal land and contains four different communities or habitats including seven species of plants and twenty-two species of animals on the endangered or threatened list.  MacArthur Beach is truly an “Island in Time.”

The Naturalist Intern will gain experience in:

– Implementing Natural Science Education Programs to 1st -12th grade students
– Curriculum writing and development
– Public speaking and Leadership
– Volunteer engagement
– Animal care (educational exhibit fish, sea turtles, reptiles)

The Naturalist Intern will develop an extensive knowledge of:
– Local flora/fauna
– The ecosystems of MBSP
– Florida Park Service

State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and MBSP regulations, procedures and policies will be followed and enforced.

Summary of Essential Position Functions:

  • Reports to the Director of Education (DOE) for all duties assigned
  • Facilitates hands-on Natural Science Education Programs
  • Assists with Park Junior Friends group
  • Assists with Park Speaker Series
  • Daily office work
  • Assists in the development of publications, brochures, news releases and registration materials
  • Other duties as needed

Crissy Field Center is a multicultural urban environmental center that primarily serves children, youth and families that traditionally have had little, if any, access to their national parks. Our programs encourage new generations to become bold leaders for thriving parks, healthy communities and a more environmentally just society.  Currently housed in a LEED platinum green building, the Crissy Field Center is also a certified Green Business.  Its facilities include a media lab, sustainability arts workshop, urban ecology lab, gathering room and teaching garden.

The Crissy Field Center is a partnership of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the National Park Service and the Presidio Trust.  The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that has worked for 33 years to help preserve the Golden Gate National Parks and enhance the public’s awareness and enjoyment of these areas.  The Parks Conservancy works hand-in-hand with the National Park Service and Presidio Trust to revitalize park sites, enlist volunteers, support educational programs, develop community programs and offer services to park visitors.

Position Overview:
The Middle School Summer Program Instructor’s primary responsibility is to lead groups of middle school aged youth in an exciting and popular environmental leadership programs in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.  Through a rich combination of outdoor excursions, restoration work, fun team builders, hands-on projects, and interactive workshops, participants will gain leadership skills, explore issues relevant to them, and connect to their National Parks.  Participants will work with volunteers to repair trails and habitats in the park, learn about environmental and sustainability problems and build skills to improve their lives, communities, and environment.  The Summer UTB program accepts 66 middle school students.  The Middle School Summer Program Instructor will oversee a team of 11 middle school students and 2 high school assistants the entire session.  The session includes 2 overnight trips (to rob hill camp ground and a 4 day, 3 night trip to Yosemite) and culminates in a final presentation about the environmental, teamwork and leadership skills that the youth have learned.

The Middle School Summer Program Instructor position reports to the Middle School Program Manager.

This is a seasonal full time position that runs from May 31st to August 3rd 2016.  It is a Monday through Friday schedule.

Description: URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking qualified educators to plan, teach, and lead outdoor lessons in Ecology (forest, wetland, wildlife, and winter ecology), Geology, Social Science (living history, archaeology, early American history), Adventure (group building, low ropes, orienteering, outdoor skills), and Evening Programs (night hike, campfire, underground railroad, etc.) to school students primarily in grades 4-8. Evening duties required (two to four nights per week). Other responsibilities are to help create a supportive community environment for students, visiting teachers, administrators, parents, and other staff, help with non-teaching resource projects on a rotating basis, help with limited kitchen duties, and participate in trail and grounds maintenance. Field Teacher/Naturalists also may have opportunities to lead environmental and outdoor adventure programs with adults, college students, and preschoolers.

The Site: The URI Environmental Education Center is situated on 2,300 acres of forests, wetlands, and old farmland—the W. Alton Jones Campus. Dedicated to environmental education, the Center has been offering quality day and residential programs for over 30 years. The residential camp facilities include a knotty pine dining lodge with field stone fireplaces, hardwood floors, and five meeting rooms. The six cabins have electricity, bunk beds, hot showers, and lavatory facilities. Each cabin sleeps between sixteen and twenty students.
