This is a 9-month Seasonal Career Scientific Technician 2 position in the Fish Program, Fish Management, Statewide Salmon unit in Region 6 and the duty station is Westport, WA.  The season for this position is March 1st through November 30th.

In pursuit of this mission, the Department of Fish and Wildlife will strive to achieve these goals:·An informed public, participating in policy development and contributing to quality decision making. Partnerships with public and international entities, tribal leaders, public volunteers and service groups to share responsibility for fish and wildlife. Maximum fishing, hunting and non- consumptive recreational opportunities compatible with healthy, diverse fish and wildlife populations. Sustainable management of marine resources to maintain the economic well-being and stability of the state’s fishing industry and to enhance recreational and commercial fishing in state and offshore waters.This position interacts with the public conducting creel surveys to assess harvest in the coastal recreational and commercial fisheries. The data collected allows in- season quota management of these fisheries, ensures maintenance of management goals set during the preseason process, and provides catch, effort, and biological information necessary  for long-term management.

DUTIES:
Collect catch, effort, and biological data from the ocean recreational and commercial troll fisheries through angler interviews and examination of catch.

Summarize collected data weekly to maintain in-season quota management goals.

Communicate with the public and recreational and commercial marine fish fisheries participants regarding current federal and/or state fishing regulations and regulatory actions, and answer other questions.


Working Conditions
Working conditions involve long odd hours; standing and bending for long periods of time; walking on unstable and slick surfaces; and working in inclement weather.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Scientific Technician 2: Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1 OR Graduation from high school or GED including one year of school science AND two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Preferred qualifications:
College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
