The Technical Communications team strives to deliver the highest quality manuals to Thermo Fisher Scientific customers. As a key member of the team, the Technical Writer will create user guides, product information sheets, and help systems for reagents, instruments, and software primarily within Thermo Fisher’s Next Generation Sequencing product portfolio. The candidate must be detail oriented, passionate about clear and concise scientific communication, and able to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to move projects along very tight timelines. Successful writers in our group are team players with a positive attitude and the desire for excellence. Candidates with experience in digital content creation, DITA standards, and XML-based authoring are preferred.
Develop scientific/technical documentation for end users from information and data provided by R&D scientists, product managers, and other key business team members.
Estimate and schedule complex documentation projects.
Synthesize and organize information in a logical and concise way to meet the needs of the target audience.
Proactively solicit information from other experts within the company as needed (e.g., technical support, field application specialists, legal).
Attend team meetings and interact with subject experts on a daily basis
Work with multiple authoring tools, including XMetal, FrameMaker, InDesign, and Word.
Manage documents within a document control system.
Manage multiple projects with multiple deliverables simultaneously
Identify and communicate risks to project deadlines in advance
Deliver under tight deadlines.
Identify and suggest improvements to processes and deliverables
Follow all processes, style guides, templates, and brand guidelines
Solicit feedback from internal and external customers to improve document quality.
Work with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.
Lead departmental special projects as needed.
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
Technical writing experience in a scientific environment preferred
Thorough understanding of technical/scientific content.
Writes clearly, concisely, and quickly under tight deadlines.
Can effectively adapt structure, tone, and style to meet business needs.
Excellent communication skills.
Expertise in key authoring tools.
Keen attention to detail and high regard for quality.
Experience in the life sciences industry preferred.
Strong relationship management, project management, and critical thinking skills.
Advanced knowledge of relevant style guide(s) and best practices.
