Position Summary: Intern(s) will facilitate and coordinate SHADOW’s environmental education programs by leading hands-on experiential field trips, developing and implementing curriculum, and assisting with daily administration and operations. SHADOW hosts nearly 30 fourth-grade classrooms throughout the month of October from Tahoma School District, the majority of which will be facilitated by the intern. Specific duties will be discussed during interviews but may include the following: administrative and operational support, programmatic support and coordination, curriculum development and review, program evaluation, leading and hosting groups at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve, occasionally leading and hosting volunteer work parties.


  • Design, develop, and implement curriculum and educational materials for SHADOW’s education programs
  • Assist and/or lead field trips and environmental education programs for SHADOW program participants
  • Assist with program recruitment and promotion
  • Collaborate with Community Engagement and Program Manager to develop future program proposals and timeline and expand educational program reach and offerings as SHADOW’s education program continues to grow
  • Utilize and coordinate organizational calendars to plan activities
  • Provide leadership in risk management before, during, and after (e.g. respond to emergencies, administer first aid, maintain first aid kits, complete incident reports.)
  • Assist with daily operational and administrative tasks
  • Represent SHADOW professionally at community outreach and networking events
  • Assist with volunteer management; lead restoration work parties as needed
  • Provide programmatic support to the Community Engagement and Program Manager as needed


  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are an essential requirement of this position
  • Experience working in educational setting and with children
  • Strong research skills
  • Enthusiasm for learning and teaching about the natural world and human cultural history
  • Ability to communicate confidently and friendly with local community members as a SHADOW representative
  • Ability to work in a flexible environment with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong work ethic, collaborative spirit, and sense of humor a must!
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar database management systems preferred
  • Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal daily supervisor and communicate effectively and transparently
  • Experience with, or understanding of, ecological restoration projects desired
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required; or commitment to obtain First Aid/CPR certification upon hiring


  • At least a sophomore status in college or university; studies in environmental sciences, education or related field preferred
  • College-level coursework and/or experience in environmental restoration/studies, education, and public speaking desirable
