The Riverside Discovery Center is seeking applications for the position of Education Curator.

Responsibilities:
• Ensure that everything you do facilitates the RDC mission
• Responsible for the overall planning/policies, administration, communication, development and evaluation of all educational programming and educational volunteers at the RDC. Recruit/supervise/train/schedule/evaluate the performance of docents, Zoofari, petting zoo monitors and other volunteers. Provide adequate training materials for their education and use.
• Assist with planning exhibits
• Educational public and media relations, and school liaison
• Conduct all educational programming. Keep accurate records of all educational programming and income generated. Provide annual education plan to Executive Director.
• Develop and conduct fun, cutting edge, curriculum-based education in all areas: adult continuing education, Scouts, family, pre-school, birthday parties, overnight excursions, teacher in-service, summer camps, classroom education, out-of-school day education, ESU educational programs, the general public and other relevant opportunities. Works to meet special needs and multi-cultural emphasis in education.
• Works cooperatively with volunteers, educators and other employees
• Develop new educational partnerships with WNCC, ESU 13, Home School Association, preschools, senior living facilities, day care centers, etc. to further the RDC educational message
• Assist with educational grant writing and AZA accreditation process
• Foster a conservation/education message in all things associated with RDC including graphics, educational programming, and exhibits. Assist in developing an educational philosophy for the RDC.
• Maintain an educational presence with the media, schools, Adopt-A-School partners and the public etc.


• Maintain a comfortable level of education animal handling experience and have the ability to train educational volunteers how to do the same
• Ensures the safety & wellbeing of all educational animals, their handlers, and the public through education, training and following established procedures.
• Assists with RDC newsletter, website, & social media
• In association with the Zoo Director and Executive Director, develops all signage within the facility, focusing on conservation and education
• Make effective public presentations representing RDC
• Assists with, plans & conducts special events
• Oversees library & bio-facts collection including cataloging and coordinating proper use of bio-facts. Maintains inventory of all educational materials.
• Responds to the public in a helpful, friendly and professional manner
• Continually improves personal educational knowledge
• Educational and general volunteer accurate data tracking
• Make recommendations regarding the educational animal collection and general animal collection
• Collaborates with Children and Nature In Our Parks partners to offer educational opportunities for ESU students
• Serves as the Adopt-A-School liaison; oversees implementation of the program
• Markets education programs & development of educational brochures
• Assists with education budget development, implementation, and keeps accurate records of all expenses and income in the education dept., making periodic reports to the Executive Director regarding education numbers, income, expenses, etc.
• Attend AZA conferences and other educational trainings/conferences as appropriate to remain current on principles, practice and new developments in education, early childhood education and the zoo industry
• Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Is available and proficient to teach any education program whenever needed
  • Ability to supervise, train, schedule, recruit and inspire docents
  • Extensive knowledge of animals and environmental education
  • Ability to establish good human and public relations
  • Basic educational tenants knowledge and standards of excellence
  • Ability to research, develop and deliver quality curriculum, aligned to educational standards
  • Knowledge of informal education practices & principles
  • Conservation message ethic, knowledge of zoos’ educational and conservation functions
  • Excellent public speaking & interpretation skills as well as ability to make public appearances for the media
  • Ability to direct, control, and plan teaching events, organize and communicate with individuals and groups
  • Ability to exercise safe work habits while in the proximity of potentially dangerous situations
  • Is comfortable handling educational animals of all types
  • Excellent computer skills, knowledge of spreadsheets, word processing, power point
  • Proven skills in scheduling programming, volunteers and record keeping
  • Ability to obtain first aid and CPR training
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, balancing multiple duties at one time, and be able to adapt to changing situations. Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities accurately and under pressure of time-sensitive deadlines
  • Ability to speak to large groups effectively
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, reports and attain goals as established by the Board or Executive Director
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge in the information and technology realm
  • Ability to develop evaluation methods for educational programs and activities
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as required
  • Ability to deal in a positive and cooperative manner with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, students and the general public
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in science, education, or related fields
  • Three years’ experience in education, informal education, or interpretation
  • Updated medical tests (TB)
  • Valid NE drivers’ license
  • Experience working with and handling animals
  • Basic knowledge of departmental budget, finance and volunteer management
  • Experience writing quality education programs
