o Plan, prepare, market and present public interpretive programs along the Hayward shoreline to a variety of audiences;
o Maintain program records, including budget and participation levels;
o Lead interpretive programs on weekends highlighting the San Francisco Bay-Estuary and surrounding salt marsh habitat;
o Conduct several weeklong summer camps to youth ages 6 to 13 years of age;
o Lead interpretive programs for local schools focusing on salt marsh ecology on weekdays;
o Assist with special event preparation and facilitation;
o Assist in the operation and coordination of the Interpretive Center and major recreation activities;
o Assist in the design and production of various interpretive media;
o Perform minor custodial duties related to the maintenance of Interpretive Center facilities and live animal exhibits;
o Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
o Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental education, education or a related field.
o Experience creating and leading programs for children of various ages.
o Familiarity with Common Core standards.
o Experience in the fields of natural history interpretation or environmental education.
o Excellent “people” skills; enthusiasm for children and education, flexible and positive attitude; well-organized and responsible; mature and professional appearance.
o Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Fluency in English required.
o Spanish language a plus.
o Ability to identify salt marsh flora, fauna, ecosystems, and other natural phenomenon.
o Physically fit to hike outdoors in heat and inclement weather. Ability to lift at least 35 pounds.
o Valid California’s Driver’s license and insurance.
Physical Requirements: Ability to hike up to 3 miles per day in heat and inclement weather. Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials up to 35 pounds; kneel, crouch, stand, twist, reach or bend.
Work Environment: Programs are conducted along the 8 miles of the Hayward shoreline.
Hours: Varies. Work hours are flexible and average 2-3 days/week at 6-8 hours/day. Programs are generally conducted during normal school hours and on weekends.
