POSITION TITLE: Seasonal Education Instructor

REPORTS TO: Education Manager
The Virginia Zoo’s Education Department seeks enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to facilitate summer camp and youth development programs. Candidates must possess experience in teaching children of a variety of ages, including very young children; be organized, creative and flexible; have good communication skills; and be able to work well in a team. Position start date is in June of 2015. Candidates must be available all weeks from June through the end of August to be eligible for hire.
o Conducting Summer Safari kids day camps
o Training and preparing for camps and other education programs
o Working in cooperation with full-time staff and other education instructors
o Contributing professionally to a collaborative, innovative, and energetic work environment
o Maintaining and organizing program supplies
o Attending and participating in staff training and meetings
o Other tasks as needed
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.
o Have a high school diploma and at least 12 hours of college credit in an applicable field of study or commensurate experience in areas of environmental or life science
o Experience working with children of all ages
o Excellent teaching and interpretive skills
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to work in the following conditions.
o Be able to stand for long periods of time
o Be able to lift 30 lbs. comfortably
o Job requires working in all weather and climate conditions including very hot temperatures and rain
o Flexible schedule and ability to work evenings, holidays, and weekends
o The starting rate for Education Instructors is $8/hr.
